Music at Zion

Our Music Director

Gabrielle Johnson, Music Director, holds a B.A. cum laude in Music and English from Harvard University and an M.S. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other
Languages/Bilingual Education from Southern Connecticut State University. She studied piano privately and at the National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington, D.C., the North Carolina School for the Arts in Winston-Salem, and the Longy School of Music in Cambridge, MA. She is a "P.K." (preacher's kid), and has provided music for churches in several denominations, beginning at the age of 16. She studied voice with Bruce Tamman, Elizabeth Hume, and Sally Sanford. She has sung in numerous "early music" groups around the country (including His Majesties Clerkes in Chicago), and with many church choirs (including with Richard Proulx at the Cathedral of the Holy Name in Chicago).

The Zion Choir

Music at Zion includes the Zion choir, that sings at the 10:00 service from September to June, including a communion anthem, and leads congregational hymns, psalms, and
service music. The choir's favorite services include the Easter Vigil, and the Good Friday and Christmas Eve services before which they present an extendedprelude. The choir rehearses Thursdays from 7 pm to 8:30 pm, and Sundays 9 to 9:30 am, in the church balcony.

NoiZ

The other regularly performing group at Zion is NoiZ, our liturgical jazz combo (viola, guitar and bass). NoiZ accompanies hymns and anthems, and sometimes presents their own special music, at most 10:00 services throughout the year. We are blessed to have such talented musicians to increase the stylisticscope of our worship.

Zion Children

The children at Zion make a joyful noise, as well. From time to time throughout the year, the younger children (K-4), the middle group (God Squad and Bible Bunch, 5th-10th) or the older students (JTA or YACs) present an anthem of their own.
